Ellinomatheia Certificates Ceremony 2019

The Ellinomatheia Certificates Ceremony 2019 took place on Sunday, February 10th, at the Embassy of Greece in Washington DC, hosted by the Hellenic Education Center (HEC) of Saint Katherine's Greek Orthodox Church.

The HEC Director, Mrs. Eleni Alexopoulou welcomed the parents, the educators and the proud students who attended the event. It was a great turnout of over 160 people.

Sophia's Pelekasis (student of HEC) melodic voice carried  the national anthems of Greece and USA beautifully, filling the room with emotions.

The Greek school of Potomac welcomed the guests with the song "Τα παιδιά ζωγραφίζουν στον τοίχο". Thank you for singing so beautifully!

The Consul, Mrs. Christina Vasilatou, in her welcoming and heartwarming speech, adressed the challenges of the Greek language, the importance of keeping it alive and congratulated the students and their parents for continuing to learn this amazing language that has played a significant role in the world for thousands of years.

GR Consul

The Consul made a special remark on the celebration of Greek Letters Day (February 9th) and Dionisios Solomos. She presented the facts of how Solomos learned Greek as a second language and loved so much his heritage that in the end he wrote the famous "Ύμνος εις την Ελευθερίαν" (Hymn to Liberty), part of which became the Greek National Anthem in 1865.
